For a successful recording on your iPhone or iPad, it's important to understand how iOS handles web apps. These tips will help you avoid interruptions and lost audio.
1. How to Prepare for a Recording Session 📝
A little setup can make a big difference. Before you start an important recording:
- Add to Home Screen: For better stability, run the app from a Home Screen icon. In Safari, tap the Share icon → Add to Home Screen.
- Enable 'Do Not Disturb' / Focus Mode: Go to Settings → Focus and turn on a Focus mode to prevent calls and notifications from interrupting your session.
- Prevent Screen Lock: Go to Settings → Display & Brightness → Auto-Lock and temporarily set it to Never. Remember to change it back later!
- Disable Low Power Mode: This mode can cause iOS to shut down the app aggressively to save battery. Ensure it's off before recording.
2. The Golden Rule: Stop Before You Swap 🔄
iOS interrupts microphone access the moment you switch apps or lock the screen. This means you cannot simply pause and resume a live recording. Instead, here’s the safe way to manage interruptions and continue your work:
- Stop the Recording: Before switching apps, press the Stop button. This safely finalizes the current recording and saves your transcript.
- Switch Apps Freely: Once saved, you can navigate away without losing any work.
- Continue Your Transcript: When you return, find your transcript and use the Add Voice Note feature to pick up right where you left off. Your new audio will be added seamlessly to the existing document.
3. Choose the Right Tool for the Job 💡
Based on your needs, choose the best workflow:
For Short, Focused Dictations:
Follow the recommendations above, and use the Live Recorder in Auralit-i. It's perfect when you can stay on the screen without interruptions.
Our 15-second buffer will protect you from minor network glitches, but it cannot prevent iOS from stopping the recording if you leave the app.
For Long Sessions or Multitasking:
Follow the recommendations above for a more stable workflow while using the Live Recorder for realtime transcription.
Or, use Apple's built-in Voice Memos app. It can record reliably in the background or with the screen locked.
When you are finished, return to Auralit-i and use the Upload Audio feature to transcribe your file.
